This series of posts introduces you to some of the most commonly used herbs of the community apothecary. While I could say vastly more, I hope that this overview helps you understand and connect with each plant in a gentle but helpful way.

Labhandar – Lavender

The Soothing Helper

Herbal Properties
Lavender is sedative, bitter, anti-microbial and anti-fungal and hypnotic in nature. It’s considered an antidepressant, cholagogue, and astringent amongst other things. It lowers cortisol levels and increases oestrogen. In low doses, it’s down-regulating to the nervous system but too much of it can be stimulating! The bitter agents aid digestion and ailments like IBS.

Emotional Properties
Lavender soothes and softens. It’s neuroprotective and stabilizes fluctuating moods.
This makes it a great companion through bereavement and grief when the cortisol levels are naturally higher than usual.
Its anti-spasmatic properties helps us release stored tension as it soothes anxiety and restlessness. On a spiritual level, lavender is often associated with the crown chakra, helping us quiet the mind and tune into inspiration

How to Use
I most joyfully use lavender in cakes and lemonades during the summer and teas and steams in winter. in food dosage, lavender is likely safe for most people.
It can be used topically in oils and creams but can cause skin sensitivity, so ensure adequate dilution. There are also supplements in capsule form.
Do use with care if you’re taking anti-depressants or are suffering from low blood pressure. Lavender is part of the mint family, so take care of you have allergies to any of these plants!
